A Headline Without a Denominator: The FIDE Claim, the Najdorf Update, and the Arithmetic of Source Integrity

A Document With Two Bodies Sewn Together

A file entered my queue last week. The top line read: Timur Turlov elected President of FIDE. The body — all fourteen information points of it — was a product listing for a downloadable course, New ideas in the Najdorf: a Power Play 18 Update, presented by GM Daniel King. The headline announced the outcome of an election. The body sold a sixty-minute video file. No shared vocabulary, no shared subject, no shared source.

I am opening with the shape of the document because the shape is the largest piece of information in it. Fourteen information points concern the product and its author. One — and only one — concerns governance. Behind that one sits the attribution line: Source, article title. No vote margin. No General Assembly date. No rival candidate. No nominating federation. No calendar anchor of any kind.

My vantage point needs stating plainly. I write from a desk in Moscow, not from a tournament hall. Since I published the first public shot-quality model for the Russian Premier League in May 2026, one rule has held: no sentence without a number. This document is the cleanest test of that rule, because one half of it cannot produce a single number at all.

Context Before Evidence

The Najdorf is the branch of the Sicilian Defence running 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6. First: 6.h3 e5 7.Nde2, the modern Adams Attack treatment. White reroutes the d4-knight toward g3 and kingside play, deliberately bypassing the most heavily memorised main lines (6.Be3 or 6.Bg5). This is a decision to avoid theory, not to demonstrate force.

Second: 6.Bc4 combined with the English Attack (Be3 and f3). The Fischer–Sozin complex is handled as a move-order and transpositional cluster rather than a single line. This is where Black's...e6 and...b5 versus...e5 and...Be7 decisions are settled.

Third: 6.Be3 with...a5, explicit coverage of the modern Black antidote in which Black grabs queenside space.

Fourth: 6.Be2 and 9.Re1, the quieter classical positional treatment.

Fifth: 5.f3 instead of 5.Nc3, an anti-theory sideline that takes White out of the Najdorf main-line database entirely.

The selection points one direction: theory avoidance for White. That tells us something the marketing does not — how heavy the practical burden of this opening really is, if a grandmaster author markets the value of stepping off the main lines.

A Twelve-Month Cycle, and a Corrective Signal

The predecessor DVD is roughly twelve months old, which reveals a publishing cadence of one year: a Black repertoire, then a White update. The product's own internal admission is that lines omitted from the first repertoire are now being added. This is not a triumphant update. It is a correction.

The correction carries the most information. A specific reader community found a gap in the first product and voiced it loudly enough to require an answer. In market language that is demand. In accounting language it is declining marginal sales of the original.

My own rule applies here. This document carries no calendar anchor for the current cycle. What exists about Daniel King — born 2026, grandmaster title in the late 1980s, peak rating in the 2500s, still pending verification — has no equivalent at all in the single governance line.

About Timur Turlov, the largest fact is an absence. No FIDE rating, no competitive record, no title. Where a prospective presidency is asserted, there is no receipt from a career at the board.

If the claim is true, that absence is not trivial. FIDE governance has carried an administrator-versus-player-credibility argument for years, and a candidate without a competitive profile sharpens it. This document supplies nothing with which to test it. I record the claim. I do not endorse it.

The Dhaka Ledger, and the Same Question

My standing beat is Dhaka, and the numbers there have been static for a long time. Bangladesh has produced five grandmasters: Niaz Murshed in 2026, Ziaur Rahman in 2026, Reefat Bin-Sattar in 2026, Abdullah Al Rakib in 2026, Enamul Hossain Razib in 2026. South Asia's first grandmaster was born in that country in 2026, a year before Anand.

The data then turns. The record shows home norm tournaments stopping after 2026, a school pipeline switched off, and a federation budget in the region of eleven lakh taka a year — roughly the ceiling of a single club-level coach's salary.

The instruction-market question arrives from the same direction. The buyer profile for a sixty-minute Najdorf update is a European league player who plays 1.e4 and gets one slow game a week; the price point is set against that budget. A 1700–2200 club player in Dhaka would need a trained coach before needing a downloaded file. The product is not poor — it is built for one market and priced for that market, not this one.

A Single-Author Product, and a Format War

Distribution here is author-dependent. Daniel King is the recognised voice of this series, and that recognition is the selection criterion — not who holds the freshest theory. King's authority is pedagogical and historical; Najdorf theory currency belongs to active elite players and their seconds. A retired author's product can lag the theoretical frontier by one or two cycles, which is precisely why an update arrives every twelve months.

The deeper competition lies elsewhere: downloadable video against spaced-repetition platforms and streamer-led pedagogy. Retention technology re-prices a legacy product. A sixty-minute video download cannot match a spaced-repetition system on long-term recall; the annual update becomes a patch rather than a fix.

The Contrarian Angle: Correlation Is Not Causation

The easy reading must be stopped here. The tempting interpretation is that private financial capital reaching the top of FIDE means an earthquake in chess economics. A headline is not a vote count. Without General Assembly records, candidacy filings, and federation-by-federation support, one cannot conclude that the politics changed — nor that nothing changed. Both directions have a denominator of zero.

A second contrarian reading is technical. Anti-theory sidelines — 5.f3, 6.h3 with 7.Nde2 — are rational countermeasures for club players because they cut the memory load. They are memory-light and calculation-heavy. Under rapid and tiebreak time controls, memorised main lines transfer better, because memory holds under pressure while calculation swings. The product's value peaks in slow home-league games and decays as tournament formats speed up.

A third reading is commercial. An update does not signal rising demand. It usually signals declining marginal sales of the first edition while a publisher defends a back catalogue.

What This Data Cannot See

When empty stadiums gave us a natural experiment in 2026, home win rate across the first sixty matches I coded fell to 32.7 percent from 43.2 percent in equivalent fixtures a season earlier — and I published every caveat alongside the sample, including the ones that weakened my own conclusion. That week taught me that the chess dataset is the cleanest one I hold: no crowd, no weather, no pitch. Clean also means the limits are clean. Third, the publisher's cadence; if update SKUs give way to subscriptions, the structure of this market has changed.
